Beliefs

Conscious & Unconscious

Introduction

Hey there Agents of Change!

It’s time to roll up our sleeves and dive in to the foundations of change!

In this module we are going to look at some of the different types of beliefs that we encounter that may be keeping someone stuck.

In every interaction between individuals, regardless of the relationship, each person brings with them a set of belief systems or Inner maps. These inner maps are a set of rules an individual lives their life by.

These are both Conscious and Unconscious.

  • Some beliefs are formed at a young age through a child’s perceptions… based on environment, culture, emotions, generational patterns, and proofs or experiences
  • Some of these beliefs are rules that our care givers have passed down from their own childhood or trauma they have experienced
  • Some beliefs are based on different cultures, what that culture believes to be true
  • Some of these beliefs individuals are consciously aware of
  • While others are connections, decisions, vows, promises made at the height of an experience and forgotten by the conscious mind but not the unconscious loyal servant

While most belief systems are effective and enable people to reach their desired goals…. some are less than effective and lead to painful destinations. It is these beliefs that we are here to learn how to uncover and relink in a more productive way.

What’s even more interesting is how the mind deals with information that is introduced to it that does not match a person’s inner maps.

  • The mind has a tendency to sometimes exclude from conscious awareness anything that contradicts a person’s personal Metaphors (also known as Stories)
  • That’s right… try to convince someone that has grown up their whole life being told that the best car in the world is a Ford that a Holden or Chevrolet is better… they will argue all day to convince you of their choice

*Beliefs are made up of emotions, sensations, feelings and proofs

FAQ

WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT ABOUT UNDERSTANDING BELIEFS?

Understanding beliefs will give you the structure of what is holding the issue or problem in place.

Changing the behavior without changing the belief is like changing the color of a building… the interior and the structure remains the same. If the structure is not addressed the mind will simply recreate the issue.

WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH A BELIEF?
Our goal is to help our clients become unstuck.  If the belief is beneficial we leave it alone.  If the belief is outdated or a source of pain… that is when we want to change the belief.  It is important to find out what the client would rather believe before starting to relink the association with the belief.
