Olfactory & Gustatory Systems
Introduction
Hey there Agents of Change!
We are now at the systems that are rarely found as a primary processing system but none the less, very important to us for creating lasting change. We now know that if there is any part of the coding of an experience left, the mind has the ability to recreate the original imprints.
In this module we are going to be looking at two different systems that play an important part of immediate recall. These systems are the Olfactory and the Gustatory systems.
The olfactory (smell) and gustatory (taste) systems tend to be less used as representational systems although strong scents and odors in particular can be powerful triggers in accessing past memories.
Often combined but have separate channels of communicating the direct experience. They are powerful systems within themselves because they bring immediate recall.
Olfactory System
The Olfactory system is dependent on our sense of smell. The olfactory nerve bulbs are connected directly to the amygdala… the part of the brain responsible for the Fight/Flight/Freeze response.
Olfactory Clues:
- Flare of the nostrils
- Raise of the chin
- Breathing & speech similar to Kinesthetic
Gustatory System
The Gustatory system is responsible for the perception of taste and flavor. It is liked to the brainstem (The primitive part of the Brain) which makes it a powerful anchor.
This system sense the five taste modalities:
- Salty
- Sweet
- Bitter
- Sour
- Umami

pictures as sharp as photographs of scenes
that had left the conscious mind.

FAQ
WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT ABOUT KNOWING THE OLFACTORY/GUSTATORY PREDICATES?
So if we are only looking at the three main systems, VAK… but there is part of the Olfactory or Gustatory that holds a main imprint in a memory it gives the mind the ability to recreate an issue.
WHY IS THE OLFACTORY /GUSTATORY SYSTEMS NOT USED IN NLP AS MUCH?
WHY DO BOTH THESE SYSTEMS CREATE IMMEDIATE RECALL OF AN EVENT?
Both of these systems are directly connected to the primitive part of the brain. They have separate channels and are connected to different parts of the primitive brain.
The olfactory is directly connected to the Amygdala, which is responsible for the Fight/Flight/Freeze response.
The Gustatory is directly connected to the brain stem creating immediate recall of the sense of taste.
CAN I EMAIL KIM MY QUESTIONS DIRECTLY?
No. You can ask all SOC (Systems of Change) related questions and get feedback from other members in the Facebook group (and Kim is in there regularly). If you have a tech or account problem please email info@kimjewell.com.au
